Only a few more days until the official start of summer! It’s such an amazing time in the south. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t look forward to it, kids and adults alike! Mother nature really shines this time of the year with beautiful beaches, parks, lakes, and forests. No wonder so many people choose the summer months for their photo sessions.

And summer is the perfect time. The kids are out of school, parents are taking their vacation days, and there are so many sun filled days for amazing photoshoots. But with the sun comes the heat! And in Georgia, and much of the south, that heat is something serious. Like, medically serious, and that shouldn’t be taken for granted. I’ve had people nearly pass-out or completely sweat through their clothes during summer photoshoots. So, I thought I might offer some professional advice if your planning on a summer photo shoot this year.

Summer Photo Shoot Tips

1. First, let’s choose the right time for your photo session. Afternoons may seem convenient, but that’s the hottest part of the day. If you can, aim for early mornings or late afternoon sessions. I usually advise sometime just after sunrise or just before sunset, what we call the “golden hour”.

2. Next, choose a great location. In the summer months, I like locations that offer shade. Whether it’s shade from large trees or buildings, that shade not only offers great lighting for portraits, but also cooler temps and a place to rest between poses.

3. Dress appropriately. Temperatures easily run over 100 degrees, so light colors and lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen. Summer dresses, linen sets, Polos, seersucker or tropical wool blend suits for men.

4. Depending on the occasion, choosing lightweight or light colored clothing may not be an option. So please HYDRATE! Before, during, and after your session. Bring cold water to your session. Consider bringing Gatorade or some other type of electrolyte drink as well. Also, eat a good meal beforehand.

5. Buy a portable electric fan and cooling cloths. I usually keep these in my kit now, but they’re great to keep in the car or in your purse for the summer (or all year long if you are a woman of a certain age like me). You can find these on amazon for less than $20. Trust me, they are a life saver!

Bonus tips – Limit your time outside. I usually keep outdoor sessions under an hour in the summer. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for a break. Spend a few minutes in the ac of your car, or a nearby public building if you can.

I hope this helps you navigate the hottest months of the year and create beautiful images this summer.

See you outside!
