fall 2024 color trends

Someone asked me recently what my favorite color was and I didn’t have an answer. But looking at my closet, the answer is definitely black! This classic neutral tops my list of fall 2024 color trends. I love black all year long really, but especially in fall and winter. It’s such an easy color to wear and style. It’s appropriate everywhere, from events to the office. Dress it up or down, it always just works! Here, my client Patricia has paired a black tuxedo jacket with a fabulous black tulle skirt. And to add a little more sparkle, red converse completes the look. This looked incredible on her and it was so much fun to photograph.

Same client, this time in a beautiful icy blue dress. I love all types of blue for fall. Navy, sky, royal blue. It’s such a wonderful color and compliments deep skin tones beautifully! You can rock it on its own like my client Patricia. You can pair it with any neutral like white, black, tan, or brown. Or, mix it with a complementary color like yellow or orange.

Black may be my favorite color, but my favorite fall color? Wine. There is something so rich and elegant about the color wine. It brings an air of sophistication and it just feels wonderful to wear. I even have a lip color to match! This is a self portrait of me in a wine colored ribbed bodycon dress from Amazon. It works well with black or brown shoes and accessories.

Olive green is a perfect fall color—earthy, chic, and easy to wear. We’ve seen it on the runways, and it’s everywhere this season, from jackets to dresses like the olive sheath dress my client is wearing. It works like a neutral, but with a bit more depth, making it great for layering or standing out on its own. Ideal for transitioning from day to night, olive green is a must-have for fall.

Orange is a bold fall favorite that always makes a statement. This season, we’re seeing shades like burnt orange, rust, and pumpkin take center stage. They add warmth and energy to any outfit, whether it’s a cozy sweater or a sleek dress. These rich, vibrant tones are perfect for rich brown skin tones and for fall, bringing a pop of color that feels seasonally appropriate. Whether you go for a bright or muted shade, orange is a go-to for making your fall wardrobe stand out.

Yellow is a fun choice for fall, and my client’s mustard jumpsuit shows just how versatile it can be. Shades like mustard, marigold, and golden yellow are perfect for the season, bringing warmth and brightness without feeling too summery. These warm tones add a pop of color to any outfit, whether it’s a jumpsuit or a cozy sweater. Pairing yellow with deeper fall hues is a great way to add some light and energy to your autumn wardrobe.

My neutrals! I guess neutrals would be my third favorite? They are definitely a favorite for photoshoots. If you’ve ever had a session with me then you know I always recommend at least one neutral color look. Here, my client Dr. Yates is wearing a caramel toffee faux leather dress. It compliments her skin tone beautifully and it’s another versatile color. For brown skinned girls, shades of brown are our nudes and are essential to our wardrobe.

Another wonderful neutral is this grey/silver that my client Queenette is wearing here. Grey is such a classic color, it is appropriate in any situation. Whether your looking for a new suit, dress, or just casual clothes to lounge in, grey is an easy choice. It also pairs well with so many other colors, it’s easy to mix and match with pieces you already own.

Since we’re not wearing white after Labor Day, off-whites and peachy creams are a great substitute. My client’s champagne-colored evening gown is a perfect example of how these soft shades bring elegance to fall fashion. Creams and off-whites add a subtle warmth that’s ideal for the season, without feeling too stark. Whether it’s a cozy knit or a formal dress, these tones are timeless and pair beautifully with richer fall colors like olive, rust, and mustard. It’s a chic, understated way to keep your wardrobe light and fresh through the cooler months.

Purple is a stunning color for fall, especially in deep shades like plum. Here, my client Bonnie wore a purple bell-sleeve dress for her branding shoot. It captures how powerful and vibrant this color can be. The deeper the shade, the better—it adds a sense of luxury and elegance to any fall outfit. From dresses to accessories, purple tones bring a bold yet sophisticated vibe that stands out against the earthy colors of the season. Perfect for making a statement, purple is a must-have for fall fashion.

So that’s it! Some of my favorite shades from the fall 2024 color trends that you can incorporate into your fall wardrobe. Want more inspiration? Check out the Pantone fall color palettes.
